SEPTUM PIERCING 101

DISCLAIMER: All that I am writing is based on my personal experience, so don't come at me, if you have had a different experience.

WHAT THEY DON'T TELL YOU:

  1. SEPTUM PIERCINGS HURT LIKE A B*TCH: Well, most of the piercings hurt, but personally out of all the piercings I have, the septum hurt the most. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest), I would definitely say 9. You feel every second of the forcep pulling your skin back and the needle piercing through it and then the next set of pulling as they insert the septum ring in there. So, if you have a very low pain tolerance, then maybe think about it.
  2. SEPTUM MAY TAKE TIME TO HEAL: Again, this may differ from person to person. But, for me, it took about a good 6-8 months for the pain to subside. Even when people told me to get rid of it, I was not willing to and instead decided to choose pain over comfort (don't be crazy like me though.) If you google it, you will see that typically a septum heals within 3 months, however in some individuals it takes up to 8 months (Yep, I am some individuals!)
  3. SMELLS LIKE SOMETHING ROTTEN: YEP. If you have a low tolerance for bad smells, a septum piercing is not for you. Just a few days or weeks after getting a septum piercing done, you will smell something rotten. At first you might be puzzled and may be take some time to figure out what or who has died. Until you realize that it's coming from you. However, it is a normal thing to happen (apparently).
  4. BRACE YOURSELF FOR A COLD/RUNNY NOSE: Trust me when I say this, but this is a nightmare. It is hard (really hard) to blow your nose or wipe your nose. So really think about it.
  5. RUDOLPHISM: You will look like Rudolph’s cousin for sometime. Yep. Your nose will be red and look slightly swollen after the piercing and continue to look that way for a bit (again, from personal experience).

IF YOU STILL WANT THE PIERCING, THEN:

  1. Get your piercing done from a professional (this is valid for all piercings). - So I made the mistake of going to a salon, that claimed to be “good” at it and was cheap - but I ended up suffering a lot afterwards.
  2. Make sure everything is sanitized - the needle and other equipments used, and that the person is wearing gloves, for safety.
  3. Confirm if the Jewellery is included in the price.
  4. Needle is new and taken straight out of a new, unopened package.

CARE FOR SOME AFTERCARE?

  1. Firstly, as your piercer if they have any tips to share. My guy did not tell me anything. Even when I reached out to him later saying it hurts a lot, all he said was “okay madam go to a doctor” (oh yeah like thanks for that😒). But many of the professionals will give you care tips and solutions as well.
  2. Beware of catching infections and allergies. Infections can be caused by the piercing itself. And allergies from the septum ring can also cause problems. So make sure you do the aftercare regularly - this includes carefully cleaning the area and keeping it dry.
  3. DON’T TOUCH IT ALL THE TIME.
  4. If at all you’ve to, wash your hands thoroughly before and afterwards.
  5. You can clean upto two times a day at max. Overdoing it can also cause more harm than good.
  6. BE CAREFUL. When dressing, while washing face, after a bath, etc - there are chances of the ring getting pulled or tugged at. So be really careful. You don’t want to star in your own version of the Final Destination. Right?

That’s about it, I guess. Just think really well. Don’t do it out of an impulse (like I did). It may not work for everybody. Think it through, and make an informed decision.

HAPPY PIERCING ❤️
